Obituary of Joan Margaret Mathews

MATHEWS - Joan Margaret (nee Evans), at the Douglas Memorial Hospital on Friday, March 3, 2017 in her 94th year. Loved mother of Carol Mathews (Stan Sauer), Whitby, and dear Nana of Megan and Katherine Sauer. Predeceased by her parents Tom and Hannah Evans, her first husband Harvey W. Mathews (1982) and second husband Trevor I. Williams (2016). Joan was born January 3, 1924, in Carmarthenshire, South Wales. During her career as a primary school teacher, she met her future husband, Harvey Mathews, and became one of the many "War Brides" who emigrated to Canada in the months following the war. Joan and Harvey settled in Ridgeway where Joan taught for several years prior to resigning to raise her family. Her passion for music was shared with the community and congregation at Memorial United Church where she served as Choir Director and Organist for over 50 years. Family will receive friends at People's Memorial United Church, Dominion and Ridge Road, Ridgeway, Ontario, on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a remembrance and memorial service at 11:00 a.m. with a reception immediately following. At Joan's request, cremation has taken place, with inurnment planned for later in the Spring. For those who wish, and in lieu of flowers, Joan's family would appreciate donations to People's Memorial United Church.
