Obituary of Rita Kubinec

Kubinec, Rita

It is with a heavy heart that our family announces the peaceful passing of Rita Kubinec surrounded by family, at a youthful age of 91, on January 19, 2022.  Rita was born at St Joseph’s Hospital, on May 28, 1930. A Fort William Girl, the second oldest of six, born to Edward and Mary Romano. Rita was raised in Fort William and continued to live life to its fullest, in her hometown of Thunder Bay.

Rita was married for 48 years, to the love of her life, Louie Kubinec, who pre-deceased her in 1999.  Rita was pre-deceased by parents Edward and Mary Romano, sister Rose Gruen (Ernie), brothers Floyd Romano (Joan) and Joe Romano, in-laws John Kubinec (Bunty) and Marg Ross (Jim).  Also nieces and nephews Joseph Figliomeni, Melissa Figliomeni, Linda Ross, Jeffrey Kubinec and Bradley Romano.  Rita is survived by her sisters Jane (Jim) Swain and Linda (Joe) Figliomeni.

Rita is lovingly remembered by her daughters Mary Ann (Kenneth) Turko and Rox-Ann (Richard) Haapa.  Her granddaughters Kristin (Simon) Cox and Lindsay (Matt) Clare, and great grandchildren Evan, Alyssa (Clare) and Ethan, Quinton (Cox).

Throughout her life, Rita’s greatest joy and number one priority was raising her family.  Later working for Bourke’s Drug store and then Kmart.  Her passions were sports always.  Curling was first followed by Hockey (especially Toronto Maple Leafs) and Baseball’s Blue Jays as close seconds.  In her lifetime, Rita was an avid Fort William Curling Club Curler; a long-time Da Vinci member; as well as a volunteer/card player at Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre.  Her strength, determination and unconditional love is her legacy.

To the end, Rita enjoyed life, sharing her time with family and friends. She was always smiling, laughing, discussing various sports play’s and reliving funny family stories. She was quick to lend a hand, her support and provided needed guidance, right to the end.  Rita was a special person whose impact will forever be felt.  We will continue to honour her memory by continuing to be loving and courageous.
