Obituary of Catherine Hickey
Catherine Mary “Kit” Hickey (nee Pickett) passed away early in the morning of September 2nd, 2021 in Niagara Falls, Ontario after a hard-fought battle with a lengthy illness.
Known as Kit to family and friends, Catherine was born in the town of Fogo, Newfoundland to Frank and Mary Pickett (Freake) on March 4th, 1945. After growing up surrounded by the love and support of her siblings, large extended family, and friends, Catherine travelled to La Scie, Newfoundland and then Harbour Breton, Newfoundland to work as a schoolteacher.
It was in Harbour Breton she met the love of her life and her husband of 55 years, Alexander. Catherine was welcomed into the Hickey family by Alexander’s parents Augustus and Ann (Boland) Hickey, as well as Alexander’s siblings. They were married on August 16th, 1966, started a family together and moved to Toronto, and then Brampton, Ontario where Catherine worked for many years with Sears Canada.
After lovingly raising her four sons to see them start families of their own, Catherine retired with Alexander to Ridgeway, Ontario where they lived with their dog, Jade. Their home became a favourite destination for their sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Catherine will be deeply missed by her husband Alexander, and four sons Robert (Sandra) of Carlisle, John of Ridgeway, Jamie (Michelle) of Oakville, and Kevin (Anna) of Brampton.
She will live fondly in the memories of her grandchildren who she showered with affection: Victoria (Josh), Jennifer, Kristine, Jonnika, Claire, Christian, Molly, Hazel, and Edison; and great grandchildren Juliet, Noah, Elijah, and Oliver.
Catherine will be lovingly remembered by her siblings Lucy (Alonzo) Penton, Donna (Phil) Brennan, and brother Patrick (Linda) Pickett. She will also be missed by her brothers-in-law Gus (Judy) Hickey, Kevin (Audrey) Hickey, and Bill (Ruth) Hickey, and sisters-in-law Mary (Cliff) Jackman and Martha Hickey (Whittle).
She is predeceased by her parents Frank and Mary Pickett, her brother Augustine Pickett, and her beloved uncles Michael Pickett, Patrick Pickett, Ambrose Freake, Leonard Freake, Leo Freake, Patrick Freake and Joseph Freake. She is also predeceased by in-laws Augustus and Ann Hickey, and her brothers-in-law Joseph (Ellen) Hickey, James Hickey and Alonzo Penton.
