Obituary of Irene Hayhurst

HAYHURST, Irene: (Lotina, Trider) – Irene passed away peacefully at the Douglas Memorial Hospital on Sunday May 19, 2013, 4 months shy of her 90th birthday. She leaves behind her children, Kenny (Sandy) Trider, Joanne (Jimmy) Newman, Susan (Larry) Duncan, and Darlene Lotina. Mom will also be missed by her sisters Margaret “Aunt Marno” Grobowsky and Lorraine Diewold of Calgary Also survived by her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and her extended family from the Legion. Irene was predeceased by her husband Bob Hayhurst (2004) and her two daughters, Margaret “Honey” Royer in 2011 and Diane Larocque in 2012. For many years she cooked and waited tables at the Anglo-American Hotel and then later at the Waverly Hotel. Those who knew Irene could count on her sense of humour and “terms of endearment” she used whether socializing or letting you know just what she thought. She was a regular fixture at the Fort Erie Legion, known to many as “Ma” or “Gramma”. They were also very familiar with the wrath of her cane, such as most of us were. Ironically, one of the bartenders from the Legion was a patient just a few rooms down the hall. Mom tried not to miss Friday karaoke nights and Saturday afternoons, accompanied by her sister, Aunt Marno. In February of this year she moved to Garrison Place across the hall from her girlfriend of 68 years Millie Zubovic. With the assistance of the staff at Garrison Place, Mom flourished and her zest for life was made that much easier. We would like to acknowledge the care she received at Douglas Memorial this weekend from Dr. Scher and Mom’s attending nurses, Helen and Colleen along with the rest of the staff. Williams Funeral Services, 722 Ridge Road N. Ridgeway are entrusted with the arrangements. Visitation was held on Friday May 24th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A service to celebrating Irene’s life was held in the Williams Chapel on Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Interment followed at McAffee Cemetery. A time to celebrate Mom’s life continued at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #71, Garrison Road Fort Erie on Saturday at 6 o’clock. In memory of Irene, donations to the “Poppy Fund” of the Fort Erie Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 71 would be appreciated.
