Obituary of William "Bill" "Pops" Stevenson
STEVENSON, WILLIAM H. “Bill” or “POPS”
Passed away peacefully from this life to be reunited with his loving wife Gladys Irene “Rene” (Leng), and their dear best friends Bruce and Del McElroy.
Predeceased by his parents Robert and Mary Stevenson of Fort Erie, his older brother Robert “Bob ”Stevenson and his wife Jean of Fort Erie, his younger brother John “Jack” Stevenson and his wife Aileen “Jo” of Gogama , his sister Marjorie “Marnie “ Stevenson of St Catharines, his daughter-in-law Brenda Stevenson of Black Creek, his brother-in-law Harry Simpson of Fort Erie and nephew Donnie Stevenson of Fort Erie.
Loving father of Randy Stevenson (Helen Potter) of Black Creek and his daughter Kim Tavano (Joe) of Chippawa, grandfather of Tricia Byrne, Rob Stevenson, Bill Stevenson (Amy), Tania Byrne (Joe Tamburri) and Steven Byrne. He was known as POPS by everyone but specially James Potter (Jessica), Bob Potter (Leanne) Logan Potter and Dave Potter (Brooke) of Black Creek and also to Rosemary Stevenson and Stephanie Stevenson. He is survived by his nieces Barbara Stevenson, Patti Chevalier (Mike) and their children Nicholas, Christopher, Carley Jean and Patrick, his sister-in-law Millie Simpson and her children Rory, Kevin and Lisa, brother-in-law John and Jeannette Leng and their children David and Michael and many cousins in St Catharines and Paris Ontario area.
Bill was born on August 3, 1932 in Fort Erie a member of the St Paul’s Anglican Church attended Douglas Public School and Fort Erie High School joining the Lincoln and Welland Reserve Force a Canadian Veteran and served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada, “B” Company, 1st Canadian Highland Battalion, 27th Infantry Brigade Group and received the Special Service Medal for his service with NATO in Germany. On returning to Canada Bill resumed his employment with the Canadian National Railway and retired after 35 years as Manager Border Operations for the Great Lakes Region.
Bill was a member of St John’s Anglican Church, Ridge Parish, for many years. Bill was a member of Scouts Canada for over 20 years, first in Kitchener as a Beaver Leader and then when the family relocated to the Black Creek area he joined the Stevensville Scouts as a Beaver Leader. When the Black Creek Scout Group was formed Bill transferred to this new group as A Beaver Leader and then he became a Group Committee Member and was the Treasurer for a number of years.
Bill’s greatest love was his family, he enjoyed gardening, cooking and hunting. Bill was delighted in sharing his many adventures with Irene, his family and friends especially the good times at the farm on Black Creek Road.
Visitation at the WILLIAMS FUNERAL HOME Ridgeway. Tuesday Aug 5 3 pm – 5 pm and 7pm - 9pm, Funeral Services will be held at Williams Funeral Home Chapel, Ridge Road, Ridgeway on Wednesday Aug 6 at 1 pm
