I have such fond and warm memories of the time the Mazzuto's took ownership of what was then called Barnes Brothers supermarket across from the Fort Erie library and Sugar Bowl park. Maybe I was 15 years old and certainly I was apprehensive about meeting the new boss.
First day on the job with Fausto as head-honcho and he grabs two big steaks from the counter, pops them into the ovens and rips open some bread and calls me over for a "snack" in the bakery section to get to know me. We used our sharp butcher knives to slice the meat and our fingers to eat as there weren't any forks readily available. Remember.... kids didn't eat their own T-bone steaks back in that day, so believe me when I say I was pretty thrilled, but mostly I was very grateful for his kindness and fatherly demeanour.
Working alongside Mike and Loredana (sometimes Luciano) was ALWAYS fun and easy, even though the work was sometimes hard. They all treated me as family and I will never forget this formative experience. God Bless Fausto and Rina and all of the Mazzuto family. And thank you all for the memories and stories that I re-tell regularly to my own kids.
