Obituary of Betty Lou Hume

IN LOVING MEMORY

Betty Lou Hume (nee Fredsberg), lifelong partner to Todd, married 69 years, passed peacefully on Jan 17, 2026. She is predeceased by her parents, Alfred and Esther Fredsberg, and two of her four brothers, Adolf and Clement.

Her two surviving brothers, Ralph (Mabel) and Milton along with their extended families will feel her loss with us.

She will be so missed by Todd, their three children Tim (Kathy) Hume, Shelley (Claude) Babin, and Nicki (Jim) Spirko. She loved her grandchildren Katie (Rick), Natasha, Travis (Chelsea), Leslie (Chris), Eric, Jordan, Samantha (Dakota), Taylor, Darren, and David. Her sweet great-grandchildren Bella, Lucas, Wilder, Tommy and Briar. She was looking forward to meeting the newest addition in July. She said that finding this out in December was her BEST Christmas present!

Betty believed in God and being of service to others. My Mother showed her love and gratitude to others by baking coffee cake, cook-ies, muffins, & fruit cake. Her regular recipients know how good it was. Sometimes delivered warm from the oven.

I remember earlier times when Mom would take a cake down to the senior home and spend time with those that had no visiting fami-lies. She was very loving and compassionate.

As the wife of a military man, our home was organized and schedules became life lessons we three children kept. When we were young, she volunteered her time teaching bowling (YBC), Brownie leader, ceramics, & soft ball.

She and Dad have travelled all over the world, living outside Canada in the early years of their marriage and they loved to drive across Canada visiting family and friends in every province along the way!

She loved to dance. Our family spent many hours learning to dance from both Mom and Dad. We would push back the couch and put the coffee table on top of it to make room for us to move.

Mom had an awesome sense of humor. I believe that is where the three of us got it. We all laugh before we even finish our jokes! Her humor was evident right to her last moments.

She played cards and had wine each night with Dad. They both enjoyed this bit of competition. We took a splash of wine to Mom on her last night (not knowing this at the time). She let out a sigh as it went down her throat and then said,” MARVELOUS!”

She worked for the Royal Bank in New Brunswick and in Niagara Falls, Fort Erie and Ridgeway. She was well known in Ridgeway as she stopped in many businesses on her way to and from the bank with the daily mail to the post office. Freedom 55!

She was honored as a lifetime member of the Douglas Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Her many interests were the coin club for over 50 years in Ontario and New Brunswick, volunteering at the Legion, avid bowler, Wednesday cards and the Red Hats.

Our Mom was loved!! So many include her as family. We have heard her described as their sister, aunt, and grandmother!

Our family would like to extend, to all her Doctors and Nurses in the GNG ER and ICU and the Douglas Memorial Hospice in Fort Erie, our appreciation for making our Mom feel your care and comfort. She was the first recipient of the GNG ICU 3 wishes program. Your dance party was a highlight! She talked about this with everyone!

A special thank you to Dr Scher for all the care and compassion given to our Mom & Dad.

Cremation has already taken place. Williams Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. A Celebration of Life will be held later when the flowers are in bloom. We hope you will join us then.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Douglas Memorial Hospice Department
