Over the two Gilmore Lodge years that I visited Dorothy weekly (except when ill), I grew from admiring her grit to loving her a lot. Visits began with catching up on her family news, especially about Luke, then about our own doings. What interested her most were tales of our garden critters, particularly our pet squirrel Amelie whom my spouse Christine had weaned from days old. Dorothy's first query was always "How's Amelie?". But she also liked hearing about the wild turkeys, deer, raccoons, opossums, and skunks that regularly visited us - much more than my world news digests!
Dorothy showed her fiestiness when moving to the new Gilmore Lodge by insisting on bringing the long bedside table Christine had hand-made for her. "Nobody's touching my table!" she declared.
I got far more joy from our visits than the small comfort I brought to her. For that, I shall always remember and bless her. May she rest in peace.
